Peru reports 44 deaths from dengue, cases rise 131% – Diario La Página – 2024-03-03 18:32:00

Dengue cases in Peru have risen to 34,042 so far this year, a figure that represents an increase of 131% compared to the same period last year, while the death toll rose to 44, according to official data from the Ministry of Health released on Friday.

The departments that have registered the most cases are La Libertad (6,148), Piura (5,275), Ica (4,645), Áncash (3,766) and Lima (2,899), all of them coastal.

Given this expansion of the disease, the Ministry of Health declared on Wednesday a health emergency in 20 regions of the country for 90 days, to identify and reduce the impact of dengue.

The health emergency affects the departments of Amazonas, Áncash, Ayacucho, Cajamarca, Cuzco, Huánuco, Ica, Junín, La Libertad, Lambayeque, Lima, Loreto, Madre de Dios, Pasco, Piura, Puno, San Martín, Tumbes and Ucayali, as well as the constitutional province of Callao.

The supreme decree indicates that the declaration is made in accordance with the details of an action plan, which aims to improve the comprehensive management of dengue case care in health facilities, and strengthen the epidemiological surveillance system and investigation of dengue outbreaks. dengue.

In addition to improving the response capacity against the epidemic, the aim is to strengthen preventive-promotional activities through coordination with local governments and reduce the levels of vector infestation.

According to health authorities, the high temperatures caused by the El Niño climate phenomenon cause the larvae of the ‘Aedes aegypti’ mosquito, which transmits the disease, to proliferate faster.
