Peru Records First Death Due to Flurona, Combination of Flu and Covid-19

Merdeka.com – Peru’s Ministry of Health today reported the first case of death from “flurona”, a combination infection from the flu and Covid-19, in an 87-year-old patient who had not been vaccinated due to comorbidities.

The victim is one of three flu cases detected in the Amazon region, said Dr Cesar Munayco, researcher at the Ministry of National Center for Disease Epidemiology, Prevention and Control, as reported by the Straits Times page, Friday (6/1).

The other two cases are a young child and a 40-year-old patient who has been fully vaccinated against Covid019, said Dr Munayco.

Those infected with this disease show symptoms of cough, sore throat, and lethargy. Dr Munayco called for residents to be vaccinated against Covid-19 immediately because it could reduce the risk of serious illness.

“It is important to get vaccinated because we are currently experiencing outbreaks of H3N2 influenza in forest areas, such as in San Martin, Amazonas, and Ucayali,” he said.

Peru announced the third wave of Covid-19 last Tuesday due to the Omicron variant that started entering the country in December. So far, there have been 309 cases of Omicron in Peru.

Flurona, a disease that occurs due to two infections, namely Covid and influenza, makes the public worried about the symptoms caused.

The term “flurona” came to attention after a 30-year-old pregnant woman tested positive for both diseases on December 30 in Israel.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), both Covid-19 and influenza are diseases of the respiratory tract that can cause symptoms of cough, sore throat, stuffy nose, fever, and dizziness.

Both types of disease can also be spread through splashes of saliva and steam when someone coughs, sneezes, or talks.

The woman who contracted the two diseases showed mild symptoms, and she was given a combination drug for Covid-19 and the flu. He was then released home on December 30, according to nurses at Beilinson Hospital in the Israeli city of Petah Tikva. [pan]
