Peru. Protesters oppose law against sex education in schools

Friday, May 13, thousands of students took to the streets of Lima, capital of Peru, to protest against the law aimed at eliminating comprehensive sex education in schools.

Protest organizers said academic groups, sex education activists, feminist collectives and others were part of the rallies. These rallies also took place in other major cities across the country.

Sex education is a hot topic of debate around the world. Conservative opinion asserts that such upbringing exposes adolescents “unnecessarily” to sexual subjects, while proponents of sex education say that if adolescents learn about their own bodies through a formalized curriculum, they will be in much better position to maintain good sexual health.

The Associated Press quoted medical student Wendy Yanac as backing protesters calling on Peruvian President Pedro Castillo to veto changes to the law that would remove sex education from schools.

On Friday, protesters expressed their opposition to another bill. If passed, the bill would undo 2015 reforms that created the Sunedu (National Higher Education Supervisory Authority), an institution to oversee college education.

The new bill provides for representation with universities in Sunedu. Critics say such a move would weaken the independent nature of the institution.
