Peru Increases Vaccination Coverage for Children under 1 Year by Nearly 8 Percentage Points: Report

In the last year, Peru increased the vaccination coverage of the regular scheme in children under 1 year of age by almost 8 percentage points. This is indicated in the report “Peru: Indicators of Results of Budget Programs” from the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI).

From 2022 to 2023, vaccination in 12-month-old boys and girls increased 7.9 percentage points, rising from 69.6% in 2022 to 77.5% in 2023. The figure shows that the country is on its way to recovering high levels. of vaccination that he had before the pandemic.

Regions with notable improvements

In addition to the department of Lima and the constitutional province of Callao, the regions of Tumbes, Pasco, Lambayeque, Loreto, Piura and Madre de Dios significantly increased their vaccination coverage in children under 1 year of age.

Lima rose 13.8 points, Callao and Tumbes 13.4, Pasco 16.4, Lambayeque and Loreto 17.5, and Piura and Madre de Dios 12.3 points.

Regular schedule vaccines

According to the regular vaccination schedule, 1-year-old boys and girls need one dose of the BCG vaccine (meningeal tuberculosis), three doses of the pentavalent vaccine (hepatitis B, tetanus, whooping cough, haemophilus type b and diphtheria), three doses against polio, two against rotavirus, three against pneumococcus, three against influenza, 1 dose of the MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccine and 1 dose against chickenpox.

Magdalena Quepuy Izarra, executive director of Immunizations of the Ministry of Health (Minsa), highlighted that, during 2023, the plan to close vaccination gaps in children under 5 years of age was executed, intensifying house-to-house vaccination, in daycares, schools , markets, shopping centers, among other places throughout the country.

He added that by 2024, the Minsa is also executing the same plan throughout the national territory. Likewise, a national vaccination sweep against measles is planned for the second half of the year. The purpose is to protect the child population.
