The Ministry of Culture of Peru declared three mummies of pre-Hispanic origin that were repatriated from the Vatican declared Cultural Heritage of the Nation, local media reported this Wednesday.
Through a vice-ministerial resolution published in the official newspaper El Peruano, the Government indicated that the movable property “presents historical, scientific and social values related to its importance for being of pre-Hispanic origin.”
He also highlighted their “characteristics, cranial remodeling and mortuary treatment of soguillas, which are practices typical of pre-Hispanic societies in the central Andes during a certain time and are part of the historical past of those that are currently missing.”
Already in October 2022 it had been reported that, after diplomatic efforts, the Holy See had an “initiative to return” these mummies that were part of its collection of assets in the Vatican Ethnological Museum.
Years before, it had been determined that they were two adults and an infant, of undetermined sex and age, who were found at 3,000 meters above sea level in the Peruvian Andes.
«The feeling shared with Pope Francis that these mummies, more than objects, are human beings, is valued. Human remains that must be buried with dignity in the place where they come from, that is, in Peru,” declared the then Peruvian Foreign Minister César Landa in 2022.
