Faced with an explosion in cases of civilians with Guillain-Barré syndrome, Peru has declared a national state of emergency. That is very exceptional.
There are already four deaths and the number of cases surpassed 180 between January and July, according to the latest report from Peru’s ministry.
Der Spiegel in one analyse: “Guillain-Barré syndrome has been repeatedly linked to vaccination against Covid-19 during the corona pandemic. In July 2021, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning: there is an “increased risk” of developing Guillain-Barré syndrome when vaccinated with the drug from the pharmaceutical company Johnson & Johnson.” Other corona vaccines also give an increased risk of GBS. Even the flu shot can lead to GBS in exceptional circumstances.
There are about 100 preliminary reports of an occurrence of the neurological disease, according to media reports – with about 12.5 million J&J vaccine doses administered.
A prominent victim of Guillain-Barré syndrome is former national soccer player Markus Babbel. The nerve inflammation temporarily paralyzed the footballer’s legs.
autoimmune response
Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is a nervous system disorder, an autoimmune reaction, associated with increasing muscle weakness and paralysis. GBS is a form of polyneuropathy; namely, the deterioration of peripheral nerves that are far from the spinal cord. The axons of the nerves degenerate and there is a loss of myelin, the substance that is present as an insulating layer around many nerve fibers and that accelerates the conduction of impulses through those nerve fibers.
90 day state of emergency
“A national health emergency is declared for 90 days due to the unusual increase in cases of Guillain-Barré syndrome,” Peru’s health ministry said in a statement. It concerns all 25 regions of this country with 33 million inhabitants.
“There has been a significant increase in recent weeks that forces us to take measures at the state level to protect the health and life of the population,” Health Minister César Vásquez told reporters.
People with Guillain-Barré syndrome should be hospitalized quickly, as symptoms are likely to worsen very quickly.
