ANNOUNCEMENTS•
A state of emergency has been declared in Peru for the next 30 days. He is restless in the country because of the deposition by President Pedro Castillo a week ago. Castillo’s supporters are calling for his release and immediate new elections.
The Ministry of Defense has declared a state of emergency to limit the movement of Peruvians. The state of emergency is intended to put an end to “vandalism, violence and roadblocks”. A curfew could also be introduced.
The protests are particularly violent outside the capital Lima: so far seven people have been killed and several people have been injured.
Castillo was arrested last week for “rebellion” after he decreed the dissolution of parliament to avoid impeachment proceedings against him. A few hours after his speech, parliament voted to impeach him and named Vice President Dina Boluarte as his successor.
Early elections
Today, the new president has asked for calm. “We cannot have a dialogue if there is violence between us.” To the demonstrators who are calling for new early elections, he says they can take place no sooner than a year.
The question is whether this pledge will satisfy the protesters. They are calling for elections to be held soon.
Deposed President Castillo, who comes from the countryside himself, has many supporters in poor parts of the country. It was announced last night that he will be detained longer. His appeal against his detention was rejected by the Supreme Court.
