The Government of Mexico has announced the suspension of the elimination of the visa requirement for Peruvian citizens to avoid entry with a view to emigration to the United States. Peru has responded with a measure of reciprocity.
The visa suspension was established in November 2012 in order to speed up the flow of people and commerce, but last Friday the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF) published the Agreement that imposes the visitor visa without permission to carry out activities. remunerated for citizens of Peru to prevent them from entering Mexico for other purposes, including going to a third country. The measure will come into force on April 20.
“A substantial increase in Peruvian nationals entering the national territory has been identified” whose profile “does not fit that of the genuine visitor or tourist,” according to the official Mexican document.
Peru will impose the obligation to apply for a visa for Mexican citizens when it comes to short-term visits “in response to the unilateral announcement” by Mexico.
“Peru regrets this decision by Mexico that undermines efforts to improve bilateral relations and affects the programmatic commitments assumed in the Pacific Alliance,” he highlights.
In 2023, 293,668 Peruvian citizens entered Mexico, 7.3 percent less than the previous year.
