Peru achieves first victory in Conmebol qualifying round

Lima. With a goal almost at the end of the game, the Peruvian team beat Uruguay 1-0 on Friday in its first victory in the South American qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup and left the basement of the Conmebol standings.

The only goal of the match was scored by Miguel Araujo, at 87 minutes of play, which meant a setback for Uruguay, which remained in third position in the table with 15 points. With the victory, Peru added six points.

In the match, which was played at the National Stadium in Lima, Peru came out early to try to unbalance the contest but found a solid Uruguay on the scoreboard.

The Uruguayan team began to control the ball, with some opportunities coming close to the area and a header by Darwin Núñez was contained by goalkeeper Pedro Gallese.

Despite the Uruguayan dominance, Peru had a chance with a powerful shot from outside the area by Sergio Peña that demanded goalkeeper Sergio Rochet, in the only dangerous attack by the Inca team.

After the break, the Inca team tried and another shot by Peña at 54′ inside the area passed near the left post.

Almost in the middle of the second half, the coach of the Peruvian team, the Uruguayan Jorge Fossati, played his cards with two changes, but Uruguay held back and in a play Federico Valverde took a dangerous low shot in the 79th minute.

But the goal came with more desire than control of the game almost at the end of the game and Peru left the last place in the table.

“We came out at the bottom, we couldn’t be worse. We are happy for the victory because we didn’t need it, this is a long road, we left our soul,” Peruvian defender Carlos Zambrano said at the end of the game.

In their next matches, Uruguay will visit Venezuela, while Paraguay will face Brazil in Asunción.
