Perth and Tormis. Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir
2024-01-13, 18:00 Concert Hall “Lielais dzintars”, Great Hall 12.00, 15.00, 20.00, 25.00
Arvo Perts and Veljo Tormis are the cornerstones of Estonian music. Perth is one of the world’s most performed composers of classical music. Tormis is one of the greatest connoisseurs of Estonian musical folklore, the power of the earth and shamanism can be felt in his music. The Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir has been ranked by BBC Music Magazine among the world’s ten most prominent choirs. The founder of the choir – the temperamental Tenu Kaljuste – will lead us into the sacred world of Perth and the folkloric world of Tormis.
The Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir and Tenu Kaljuste have been creatively united for many years with the music of Arvo Pert and Veljo Tormis. Both of these majestic boulders of Estonian music are at the core of the choir’s repertoire and can owe a great debt of gratitude to the choir and the maestro for enlivening and popularizing their work. Tenu Kaljuste has received several Estonian cultural awards for his readings of Tormis’s music, while his performances of Perth’s opuses have brought the conductor a Grammy and an International Classical Music Award (ICMA).
