Certain personality traits can protect us from dementia – that’s the conclusion of a recent study.
The research, actually an analysis of no less than eight previous studies, conducted on 44,000 people, showed that our personality can protect us from dementia, provided we cultivate those positive traits.
Specifically, according to researchers at Northwestern University in Chicago, personality traits such as conscientiousness, sociability, and positivity seem to lower a person’s risk of being diagnosed with dementia.
On the other hand, being neurotic and negative brings with it a greater risk of mental decline, the same study found, writes UPI.
If low scores for conscientiousness or extraversion are added, the risk of disease increases.
“Neurotic people are more prone to anxiety, mood and worry, while conscientious people are more likely to exercise, go to preventive health care and drink less,” explained Eileen Graham, associate professor of medical social sciences. at Northwestern.
But such negative traits can be shaped and it is within our power to try to change something. Openness to experience can be cultivated, as can agreeableness and life satisfaction, and such traits have been associated with a lower risk of dementia.
