Personal Reflection: Aija’s Journey to Santiago and Saying Goodbye

In an interview in the December issue of “Santa” magazine, Andreyev recalls the trip. Initially, she thought that going to Santiago was cliché, but in 2022 she unexpectedly decided that she needed it. “No one I met there went this way for sports or anything like that. Everyone has something on their heart. (..) In the spring of 2022… I unexpectedly decided that I needed it. I started preparing, and in September I went with my friend Diana . We had decided to go at our own pace, and – we want to, we go together, we don’t want to, we break up. Because at the end of the day, everyone has their own path.”

“I went to say goodbye to my father, in a way to my brother as well [Aijas brālis Anrijs bez vēsts pazuda pirms 18 gadiem šosejas Rīga–Daugavpils posmā starp Lielvārdi un Ikšķili un tā arī neatradās – red.],” explains Aija, who has covered a total of about 400 kilometers long. She also told an Irishman she met on the way:

“I’m going to delete my dad’s phone number.”

“I ran the last kilometer to the lighthouse – as soon as I saw the ocean from the mountain. Tears were already falling. I sat down by the lighthouse, and tears fell like water. In this place, as the sun sets, I say goodbye to the dead. I put the song “Последняя поема” (Poslednyaya poema) from the movie “Вам и не снилось…”, which was special for me and my dad.
