Persona 5 Tactica: New World, New Allies, New Adventures

In this latest addition to the Persona 5 collection, we once again take on the role of Joker when the Phantom Thieves move to a new world. We start Persona 5 Tactica at the well-known café Leblanc, where the door to the outside world suddenly seems different than we are used to. The Phantom Thieves decide to investigate and soon notice that the world outside Leblanc is no longer Tokyo, but rather resembles a palace in the metaverse.

They are soon surrounded by Legionnaires who are followed by the ruler of the empire, Marie. Marie is in full preparation for a grand wedding and fights every disruptor with an iron fist. When the Phantom Thieves get in her way during preparation, she decides to steal their hearts for a change. After an intense collision that charms almost all Phantom Thieves, Joker and Mona are on their own again. Just when the situation with Marie seems to be getting hopeless, Erina appears. The leader of the local rebel army decides to rescue the two remaining Phantoms and inform them of the state of the realm they are in. Ultimately, the Phantoms decide to aid Erina’s rebel army in exchange for her help in freeing their friends. Can they trust Erina? And what is this realm really?

As usual, we see the worst in people and the best in storytelling in this new Persona spinoff. With every step forward, new questions arise about the true nature of the world, allies and enemies. The new characters added to the game are all full of personality and complement the existing cast nicely. Both the general story and the small conversations in between are exciting, humorous and guaranteed to keep you captivated.

Persona 5 Tactica is a strategic RPG title this time. During the battles against the Legionnaires, you can take on missions with a team of three. By using the map well you can stay hidden, so enemy attacks miss you or don’t do much damage. Of course, the enemy will also take cover, so you need to use Persona or physical attacks to keep them exposed. If you attack again, you will break the enemy’s defenses. Just like with Persona 5, this allows you to create a ‘One More!’ to get. During this extra turn, you can position your characters to form a triangle around both the fallen enemy and some of his allies and attack them in an All Out Attack. In this way, P-Studio has successfully integrated the Atlus classic into the strategic RPG genre. In between battles you can strengthen your team with new weapons and Personas. Unfortunately, you’re stuck in the metaverse and can’t rely on Iwai and his model weapons. Instead, Lavenza returns to provide both weapons and Persona upgrades.

In addition to the main campaign, you can also delve into side quests. These quests are a difficult challenge to test whether you can get the most out of the game mechanics. For example, chaining your ‘One More!’s requires you to traverse an entire folder. If you miss a step in the chain of repetitions, it will be impossible for you to reach the end.

The only downside we could find is that the keybinds are very different from what we are used to. You can of course easily adjust this, so it can hardly be called a downside. Just remember to first check to see if everything is working the way you would like it to.

It probably won’t surprise any Persona fan that the art direction is once again extremely stylish. We may be moving towards a simpler chibi style of animation, but that doesn’t stop the characters from being beautifully designed and complex. This title is slightly more frivolous than the original, both because of the animation style and the witty writing style. It is also not surprising that the soundtrack is again a hit full of discs. Both old favorites and new songs make an appearance and take the game to new heights with their jazzy vibes.
