Person drowned during ‘Fire and Light’

Aalsmeer – During the annual fireworks show ‘Fire and Light on the Water’ a person drowned on Saturday night. The police and fire department received a report of a “person in the water” at Surf Island around 23:00. A large-scale search operation was immediately started by fire boats, diving teams and the Rescue Brigade. Around midnight the victim was found and brought ashore, but despite resuscitation attempts the person died on the spot.

The police assume a fatal accident and offer victim support to witnesses who need it. The incident took place during the busy fireworks show on the quay of the Kudelstaartseweg, which attracts thousands of visitors every year. Witnesses reported that there were “hundreds of people” standing around the search operation, while the festivities continued.

The cause of the incident is still unknown. Police are investigating how the victim ended up in the water. The identity of the victim has not yet been released.

This incident is of course a big damper on the otherwise beautiful and successful fireworks show, which was organized with the cooperation of Radio Aalsmeer and was broadcast live on TV Aalsmeer. The music could be followed by the various boats on the water via the FM signal of the local broadcaster.
