Is everyone coughing right now?
And not just a few days, but sometimes for weeks. What’s behind this persistent, constant cough? When should we urgently see a doctor? And why do we even cough? Lung specialist Dr. Matthias Krüll answers the most important questions.
Why do we even cough?
„Coughing is a very important stimulus that helps clear our airways – especially the upper respiratory tract, so that nothing slips in and becomes blocked,” explains pulmonologist Dr. Matthias Krüll in an RTL interview. The whole thing is activated by a small receptor. “And if it gets irritated, for example by viruses or bacteria, i.e. an infection, but also by fluid that keeps running down the top, then I have to cough.”

Why is coughing so persistent and long-lasting?
There are a few viruses on the move at the moment that are seriously inflaming the upper respiratory tract, explains Krüll. “That’s why it gets stuck and we have to cough constantly and that lasts for weeks.”

When should I see a doctor if I have a constant cough?
According to Krüll, it is important to check where the cough really comes from. In most cases this comes from the upper respiratory tract, but sometimes the cough also has other reasons such as the larynx or the lungs. “It’s very important when it’s so persistent to take a look at what’s behind it.” Then you should definitely go to the doctor.
Only then can you determine exactly which area needs to be treated and what is best to do. By the way, antibiotics are not the treatment of choice in the vast majority of cases. This is only necessary if there is a purulent cough with fever that lasts for days.
How do I know if my lungs are affected?
“There are a number of symptoms that are typically associated with lung disease,” explains the doctor. These are: Coughing, shortness of breath and mucus formationwhich then sticks stubbornly and then manifests itself with noises such as rattling and whistling when breathing.
“If it doesn’t go away on its own after a certain amount of time, if it persists, then the point is to say, now I have to see what’s behind it.” Even then, going to the doctor is important.
