Persian lemon growers recover in Oxkutzcab

The box of 20 kilos is bought up to $ 180

OXKUTZCAB.— In recent weeks, the price of Persian lemon has been up and down, as the 20-kilo box costs 100 pesos, while the sweet orange begins to rise in price.

The first quality export lemon is bought for up to 180 pesos, and the variation in the price of citrus does not discourage farmers because the production has good displacement in the national and international market, reported farmer Ariel Canté Hoil.

As for the sweet orange, the purchase price began to rise, as it is available for up to 70 pesos.

In this month, the mandarin is one of the citrus fruits with more demand and is bought up to $ 100.

However, lemon is also one of the best-selling citrus fruits.

For the farmers of the south of the State, the lemon represents an economic income that they see from October to April or March.

Lemon growers have the best time to harvest in the first four months of the year, as the fruit increases in price as it becomes scarce. In 2013 it sold for up to $ 800 a box.

According to Carlos Dzul May, this represents a recovery of resources in the payment of irrigation, fertilization and maintenance of the orchard.

Every year the citrus growers are supported by the authorities, with the prohibition of the entry of foreign lemon in local markets, in order to avoid the collapse of prices that affects farmers.— megamedia
