Perseverance Rover Discovers Organic Compounds in Jezero Crater on Mars – Potential Signs of Life

Thursday, 13 July 2023 – 17:03 WIB

LIVE Techno – Perseverance Rover has found evidence of organic compounds in the Jezero Crater on Mars. But this is not a weapon proving that Earth’s immediate neighbors once hosted life – these compounds could also evolve in non-biological ways.

The findings soothe the organic, highly complex conditions for ‘key building blocks for life’ on the Red planet. This study is published in Nature.

Perseverance Rover, the first to explore Jezero Crater, has hidden the area since February 2021. Researchers believe the basin once housed an ancient lake, including a delta of rivers that once flowed into it.

It is one of the areas most likely to reveal residual signs of life on Mars, launching from the site EngadgetThursday, 13 July 2023.

Organic molecules such as those observed in Jezero Crater contain carbon atoms and often hydrogen atoms. It is a core component of life as we know it on Earth, though it can also evolve biologically.

“These substances are interesting clues to astrobiologists because they are often considered the building blocks of life,” said paper co-author Joseph Razzell Hollis, a postdoctoral fellow at London’s Natural History Museum.
