Perseid Meteor Shower 2023: Peak Viewing Times and Best Locations to Witness the Celestial Spectacle

The annual celestial phenomenon, the Perseid meteor shower, will reach its peak this year next week on or around August 12-13. Look at the menu.

The Bosscha Observatory revealed, in a post on its Instagram account, that this year’s Perseid meteor shower was active from August 17 to 24.

“[Hujan meteor Perseid] visible from 00.16 WIB until just before dawn. “The peak occurred on August 12 with about 150 meteors per hour,” the Bosscha Observatory said.

The intensity of this meteor shower reaches 150-200 meteors per hour. However, according to NASA, the meteor shower usually averages around 100 meteors per hour.

To be able to see this phenomenon, look for a place that is not blocked by anything. These meteors are visible once it gets dark, but the best time to see the Perseids is after midnight.

The Perseids will appear to be moving sideways from their bright spot, which is located in the constellation Perseus, the hero. This meteor has been active since July 17th, and will last past its peak until around August 24th.

On the evening of August 12, the Perseid meteor shower will reach its peak activity, providing stargazers with 60 to 100 meteors per hour.

Although best seen by observers in the northern hemisphere, the Perseids can be seen as far south as mid-latitudes as well.

NASAon its official website, states that the Perseid meteor shower is often considered the best meteor shower because of its high levels and pleasant late summer temperatures.

So much so, in fact, that the Perseids are the only meteor shower to ever delay a space shuttle launch.

In 1993, NASA’s launch of STS-51 was canceled due to concerns that Perseid meteor shower activity would increase the possibility of spacecraft in Earth orbit being damaged.
