Shooting
The perpetrators of Sunday evening’s shooting in Brussels have still not been caught, the Brussels public prosecutor’s office says. Four people from the entourage of the two victims were questioned.
On Sunday evening around 6 p.m., two people opened fire in Lacaillestraat in the Marolles. Two people were seriously injured and taken to hospital. The perpetrators, who may have fled with a scooter, have not yet been caught. The Brussels public prosecutor’s office announced this in a press release on Monday.
The seriously injured victims are not in danger of life. In the meantime, witnesses have been interviewed, a ballistics expert and medical examiner have been appointed and the camera images are being analyzed. “Four people were interpellated by the police during the evening,” says public prosecutor Willemien Baert. “After questioning by the police services, the four people were made available to the public prosecutor’s office. The magistrate on duty released them. This concerns four people from the entourage of the victims.”
In order to “clarify the correct context of the facts and in the interest of the investigation,” the public prosecutor’s office does not provide any further information about the case.
It is not yet certain that the shooting was linked to the drug environment, but on Sunday evening a resident of the apartment block where the shooting took place told De Standaard that there have been problems with dealers for years, “certainly since the 1980s.” It even went so far that until recently the entrance hall was used by dealers to hide their stock.
