Perpetrators of Russian crimes must be brought to justice, MEPs admit

In a statement, the Foreign Affairs Committee urges an urgent and significant increase in political, economic, financial, military, technical and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine to help it defend itself against Russia’s aggressive warfare and attempts to destabilize Ukrainian state institutions, undermine the country’s economic stability and destroy critical energy, communications, water supply and transportation infrastructure, as well as educational, health and cultural infrastructure.

MEPs argue for the need to develop an EU-wide legal regime that allows EU member states to use frozen Russian assets for the reconstruction of Ukraine and compensation for victims of Russian aggression.

The Commission reiterates its firm support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders, as well as its firm decision not to recognize the annexation of Ukrainian territories, including the Crimea peninsula, as well as his firm support for further integration of Ukraine into the Euro-Atlantic space.

Affirming solidarity with Ukraine and the Ukrainian people, the Foreign Affairs Committee agreed to request consideration of the statement at the December 8 session of the Saeima.
