Jakarta –
A Perodua Bezza car consumer in Malaysia confided in social media that the car he bought was damaged. In fact, the car had only been delivered 8 hours from the dealer. Finally, Perodua agreed to buy back the car and replace it with a new one.
This incident first occurred on October 17 2023. The consumer named Nagakanni Subramaniam explained that he bought a car at the Harapan Terang Motor Sdn Bhd Segamat Sales Center at 11.00 local time. Unfortunately, 8 hours later, at 19.40 local time, the car engine no longer started when starting.
Several months later, the Nagakanni car, which was damaged after 8 hours of purchase, was finally bought back by the Perodua manufacturer. The Second Otomobil Company Sdn Bhd (Perodua) is said to have agreed to buy back the damaged Nagakanni car units. The installments previously paid by Nagakanni were also fully returned.
“Perodua finally agreed to buy back my car at full price. With this decision, I no longer have to pay car installments and the previous payment will be returned to me,” said Nagakanni as quoted by Bernama.
Nagakanni said, Perodua also gave the option to buy a used car at a price similar to the installments paid or reject the offer and buy another car. Nagakanni said he was given seven days to decide whether he would accept the offer. He also expressed his gratitude to the public for supporting him in getting his rights as a consumer.
“I thank all of you. The struggle to get my rights from a big company is certainly not an easy thing, especially for an ordinary person like me. But I learned something that even though we are as small as ants, when we join forces no matter what color or race, we will be successful, ” he said.
This case received attention from Kepong Member of Parliament Lim Lip Eng. He said it was time for the government to enact new laws to prevent a recurrence of similar problems.
According to him, Nagakanni might be the lucky person to receive a replacement car. However, he said, without pressure from social media, Nagakanni might have had to bear the losses on its own.
“After the ordeal went viral, and netizens put a lot of pressure on the car manufacturer, the national car manufacturer finally agreed to buy the car back,” he said.
“While it is an honor for a car manufacturer to replace a Nagakanni car, it is almost unheard of for a car manufacturer to exchange a recently sold defective car with another new car in Malaysia, without first taking the matter to court. At the same time, other parties may do not enjoy the same returns but may have to suffer losses, especially when they buy cars on credit,” he said in a statement.
