Periklindo Chairman Moeldoko Agrees with Selling Electric Motorbikes without Batteries

Jakarta

Chairman of the Indonesian Electric Vehicle Industry Association (Periklindo), Moeldoko agree with the suggestion of the Ministry of Transportation who asked electric motor sold without battery. Because, by doing so, the price of the non-emission ride becomes more affordable.

Moeldoko confirmed that currently the price of electric motorbike batteries is still relatively expensive. That is why, according to him, the battery rental business model is considered more ideal than full ownership.

“In my opinion (selling molis without batteries) is more ideal because it is more affordable for the community. It’s just that people in the regions don’t know where the swap is, because it has to be evenly distributed,” said Moeldoko when answering detikOto’s question in South Jakarta, Thursday night (6/4).

Moeldoko, who also serves as Head of the Presidential Staff Office (KSP), hopes that in the future key components such as batteries can be produced locally. Because, by doing so, the price is much cheaper than imports from abroad.

He is sure that if all components were produced domestically and the price of electric motorbikes was more affordable, consumers’ interest in buying them would definitely increase.

“Actually the key is if batteries can really be produced locally, it’s definitely cheap. That’s all. So this industry is technology-intensive and capital-intensive,” he said.

It is known that Moeldoko’s statement was a response to a suggestion by the Main Expert Staff of the Minister of Transportation (Menhub) for Land Transportation and Connectivity, Budi Setiyadi, who asked manufacturers to sell electric motorbikes without batteries.

According to Budi Setiyadi, 40 percent of the cost of producing electric motorbikes in Indonesia comes from batteries. That’s why, by not including the battery, the price of these vehicles must be cheaper.

“The most expensive component of an electric motorbike is the battery. In fact, it is almost 40 percent. That’s why, if possible, selling motorbikes does not (include) with the battery. So buy a motorbike but without a battery. So the price can be lowered,” Budi suggested.

Budi admitted that he had met the Battery Standardization Agency or BSN to discuss the standardization of electric motor batteries in Indonesia, including component dimensions. He hopes, all uniforms are made to make it easier for the wearer.

“I have communicated with BSN (National Standardization Agency) so that the battery that can be swapped, if possible, has the same battery dimensions. So any brand of motorbike can use the same battery,” he said.
