Perigee Phenomenon, Semarang Coastal Flood Potential

SEMARANG, AYOSEMARANG.COM – A number of waters in Indonesia have the potential to experience high waves and coastal flooding. The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) appealed to residents to be vigilant. Especially residents in low-elevation coastal areas such as Semarang, Demak, Pekalongan to the coast of East Java and the north coast of Jakarta.

The potential for flooding is due to astronomical factors perigee, when the Moon is at its closest point to Earth.

The astronomical factor perigee occurred on August 21, 2020 and this has an effect on increasing sea level in Indonesian territory, said Deputy for Meteorology BMKG Guswanto in a release on Friday (21/8/2020).

Apart from the consequences of these astronomical factors, there are also meteorological factors in the form of high potential waves which are predicted to reach 2.0 to 2.5 meters in the Java Sea and northern Java waters.

The potential for high waves is also influenced by the gusts of eastern winds or the persistent dry season reaching speeds of up to 20 knots or 37 kilometers per hour so that it contributes to the increase in sea level rise.

He said the combination of these two factors could cause coastal flooding in the period 21 to 23 August 2020 in the northern region of Java.

Then it is also necessary to watch out for the trend of increasing significant waves on 24 to 26 August 2020 which range from 2.5 to 4.0 meters in the western waters of Sumatra, Java Sea, Flores Sea, southern Makassar Strait, eastern waters of Southeast Sulawesi, western Indian Ocean Sumatra to south of Nusa Tenggara, Banda Sea and Arafuru Sea.

BMKG appealed to the public, especially those with the eyes of searching and doing activities on the coast or the port to increase awareness and mitigation efforts against potential tidal disasters and high waves.
