Perhaps the Xbox Series X will have a port for CFExpress drives

Last month on the web leaked An image of the back of the Xbox Series X prototype where the console ports were located. HDMI, USB, Ethernet, and optical audio ports are nothing unusual, except for one that no one could pinpoint. As a result, the public suggested that it was intended for debugging. But that may not be so.

According to famous Xbox insider Brad Sams (Brad Sams), a mysterious slot is needed to expand the memory. This makes sense as both the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 will take advantage of fast solid state drives. And for both consoles, manufacturers could come up with new storage solutions.

Sams suggested that the memory expansion slot (approximately 31 mm × 4 mm) is suitable for the CFExpress Type B memory card. The Phison PS5019-E19T memory controller in the Xbox One X (a chip that provides high-level data transfer between the SSD and the processor) is also compatible with CFExpress Type B cards.

CFExpress Cards is a new generation of memory card technology that provides read and write speeds similar to a solid state drive. They also very expensive currently $ 200 for 128 GB and a whopping $ 600 for 512 GB. However, the development of technology is moving quite rapidly, prices are gradually falling, and Microsoft can simply prepare in advance for a future solution.

Of course, there are other options. Microsoft, perhaps, plans to use standard NVMe solid state drives in some custom case (cartridge). This would help solve the price problem, since a 512 GB NVMe M. 2 SSD costs only about $ 150.

The last and least attractive option is that Microsoft is returning to the era of PlayStation 2 / GameCube and plans to sell some kind of memory expansion card of its own, but this seems extremely unlikely in 2020.
