Performing tests of the cardiac catheter on the simulator • THE ECONOMY OF COLOGNE

The Cologne-Porz hospital has given special treatment to young cardiologists training guest. The doctors were able to practice with a simulator during the cardiac catheter basic course and thus gain important first practical experience.

Using cardiac catheters, cardiologists can use balloons to dilate vessels and place stents, procedures that are often performed in the hemodynamics laboratory. For young doctors, the technical foundations (e.g. injection of contrast media or insertion of threads) are still new in practice. The simulator training was therefore particularly popular. The first coronary interventions were completed successfully. “For clinicians, this has the advantage that they can practice the movements in a simulation in peace, and patients benefit from safer treatments,” says Dr. Dennis Rottländer, medical director for structural heart disease.

Hands-on experience could be gained all day on the cardiac catheter simulator. By looking at the monitor, cardiologists can see, for example, where a stent needs to be placed.

The chief physician Dr. doctor Petra Weßling and senior doctors Dr. doctor Helge Anders, dr. physician Dennis Rottlander and physician Dr. Ehssan Berenjkoub offered various focus points on heart problems as part of the course. After an introduction to coronary angiography and a knowledge of the basics of coronary intervention, the participants were able to work on different cases and exercises in three groups.

Using specific patient cases, Dr. doctor Petra Weßling, acute coronary syndrome, especially the treatment of acute myocardial infarction. The course also had the aim of getting to know the laboratory of cardiac catheters and to become familiar with the tools and materials used. These important aspects were discussed by Dr. Helge Anders, who said: “Knowledge of the materials is essential for the successful execution of a cardiac catheter examination.” At the end of the course, Dr. Ehssan Berenjkoub summarizes the golden rules of cardiac catheterization.

“We attach great importance to training, even outside our company. If we can help cardiologists in and around Cologne to become better and more confident in their work, it helps to ensure good care overall. Any idea of competition would be completely inappropriate here. It’s about helping people,” says Chief Physician Prof. Dr. Marc Horlitz.

The “Porzer Coro Basics” took place for the fourth time. The course is aimed at future cardiologistswho have had little or no experience in the cardiac catheter laboratory. The idea to offer a coronary angiography course at the Cologne-Porz hospital came from a team that treats numerous patients every day in three cardiac catheter laboratories. The aim of the workshop is to provide a realistic and practical insight into the process. The series is expected to continue in 2023.
