What pierced the young girl’s esophagus was none other than brush bristles that had entered the sandwich as a foreign object. It is believed that the hair fell from the brush used to clean the grill plate and got into it when making sandwiches.

On the 18th (local time), the New York Post, an American media outlet, reported on a 9-year-old girl in Australia who suffered a terrible experience due to a sandwich containing bacon and eggs. The girl suddenly felt suffocated after buying a sandwich from a street vendor in Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia.

The girl’s mother, Christine Saunders, thought nothing of these symptoms. She thought it was a temporary symptom that appeared after eating too quickly. The girl’s condition seemed to be gradually improving. Other than a sore throat and difficulty swallowing, she had no major problems, and she was even able to participate in sports events held at school. But one day, the girl’s health suddenly deteriorated.

“I was spending time with my daughter at home when she started responding to me and became confused,” Christine said. Surprised, he took the girl to the hospital. By the time she arrived at the hospital, the girl’s symptoms had worsened to the point where she stumbled, lost consciousness, and had difficulty recognizing her family.

The cause was a foreign object called a ‘BBQ brush’, or meat grill cleaning brush, contained in the sandwich I ate for breakfast. Because it is used to clean the grill plate, the bristles of the brush have stiff characteristics. The hair that fell from this brush pierced the girl’s esophagus and entered the carotid artery (the blood vessel that supplies blood to the brain), causing the worst possible outcome, including infection and abscess. Fortunately, the girl reportedly completed the surgery successfully.

“(What happened to my daughter) doesn’t happen often, but I don’t want other people to experience this,” Christine said. “We need to think about the fact that BBQs are often used at sporting events every weekend.”

According to a 2016 study published in the U.S. Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery journal, there were about 1,700 cases of emergency room visits due to grill brushes from 2002 to 2014. Experts advise that if you leave the brush hanging on the grill when using it, it may fall out over time and have a negative impact on your health. The stiff and sharp hairs stick to grills and cooking utensils, and can enter the body if mixed with food during cooking.
