Pérez strongly expects Mercedes in Brazil: “We also saw it in Mexico”

Sergio Pérez thinks he could have had an even better result in Mexico if he could have gone for the undercut instead of Lewis Hamilton. The Red Bull driver expects the coming weekend to be just as exciting and therefore does not dare to make any predictions.

Pérez managed to seize a beautiful third place during his home race in Mexico City last weekend. In doing so, he became the very first Mexican driver to finish on the podium in a race in Mexico. Although it was of course not a victory, the celebration afterwards was enormous. “We certainly had fun on Sunday evening,” the Red Bull driver looks back from Brazil. “It was very special to have everyone there who has supported me from day one. For example, Carlos Slim gave me my trophy on the podium, my children and family were there too. It was a great day for me.”

Undercut

While Perez is very pleased with the result, he thinks there could have been more if Lewis Hamilton hadn’t gone for the undercut. “I think we should have done the undercut earlier, but there was no chance for that. One of the Ferrari‘s rode in the road and she [Mercedes] did it exactly that lap… If they hadn’t pitted that lap, I could have done the undercut,” explains the Mexican. “It’s a race where it’s all about position, because overtaking is difficult in Mexico. We didn’t have enough on the tires to overtake him. He had a hard time at the end, but was able to pick up his pace again. I never really had a chance.”

Grand Prix of São Paulo

As for next weekend’s São Paulo Grand Prix, Pérez can be brief. “I think it will be close,” emphasizes the 31-year-old driver. “We saw it in Mexico as well. They were stronger in qualifying, but I think we were only stronger in the race because Verstappen took the lead. If Mercedes had stayed in the lead, I think things would have turned out very differently . So I think it’s going to be very close. We’ll see who takes the lead.”
