Perez looks at Verstappen: “He is the only one who can do that”

Red Bull is a team that normally mainly promotes drivers from its own training program, but for the 2021 season Helmut Marko decided to look outside the Red Bull family. Sergio Perez was brought to the team to try to support Max Verstappen and hopefully win both world titles.

Where the Mexican has been invaluable to the team from time to time, such as in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, he could hardly keep up with his teammate. This is also apparent when we compare the performance of the two drivers. Where Verstappen became world champion, Perez did not get further than fourth place in the championship, 205.5 points behind his teammate.

The Red Bull driver says he learned a lot from his Dutch teammate in his first year with the team. “I have refreshed the experience I have gained over the years here (At Red Bull, ed.). I learned from Max how he pushes the car to the limit from start to finish. I think he is the only driver today who has the ability to do that,” Perez is quoted as saying by Spain’s Sports stadium.

Perez aims for world championship in 2022

He can apply the experience Perez gained at Red Bull in 2021. The Austrian stable has extended the contract with the Mexican and next year he will have to compete again against Verstappen.

Perez thinks that one year of experience will make a lot of difference and sets the bar high for 2022. “I want to become world champion, it’s my dream and I want to realize it with Red Bull. I can achieve it next season, that’s why I’m here.”
