“Peppino Impastato chose to fight against the criminal mafia power starting from an uncomfortable position because he himself was the son of a mafioso. His is therefore a story of rupture”. As Luisa Impastatonephew of the DP militant killed 46 years ago by the mafia, remembers his uncle a Oxygen for information.
His figure is all the more complex, he says, because “he not only took the side of the anti-mafia, but also of rights, anti-fascism, environmentalism, social issues that made him divisive. And he still is today (fortunately !), as demonstrated by the story of the students of a high school in Partinico who claimed that they did not want to name their institute in memory of Peppino and the mother Felicia“.
“A case which on the one hand saddened us – explains Luisa Impastato -, on the other it was an additional opportunity to continue our commitment, convinced that the kids should always be listened to and never exploited”.
Peppino Impastato was also a writer, a reporter “who made information a form of resistance. For this reason I am pleased that he is included by Ossigeno among the Italian journalists killed even though he was not officially a journalist. He received the membership card from the Order after death, with the date May 9, 1978”, recalls the granddaughter.
“He is a symbolic figure – adds Luisa Impastato – because he fought for a society free from oppression and social injustice. If Peppino continues to inspire the commitment of many and many it is thanks to those who continued to tell his story to defend his memory, in particular to his mother Felicia. The mafia culture would have wanted her to mourn her son in silence within the walls of her home, but she instead chose to open those doors and continue to tell her story about Peppino, managing on the one hand to obtain the judicial truth for his murder, on the something else to redeem the son’s story, handing it over to subsequent generations”.
