Jakarta –
Pepi Aprianti Utami has lived in Ukraine for a decade. This is his consideration to stay alive not to leave the country, in the midst of the Russian attack. “I have family here, friends and also a job. So that’s one of the considerations.”
The feeling of worry has always haunted since the invasion of Russia at the end of last February. Together with her family, this woman from Indonesia fled from her home in Kyiv to another area that is considered safer: “My house happens to be in Kyiv, in the city center, the center of Ukraine. So there it is like a gateway. When the Russian state enters Ukraine through the north, my house is there, so that’s why, I decided to relocate immediately.
Pepi is temporarily in a city in western Ukraine which is relatively safe from the Russian invasion for a while. “For now, in the current situation, my plan is to stay here until the Russian invasion is over. And even then, if it gets worse, I have other plans to relocate to a safer place,” said Pepi. “To plan what I will plan is very difficult in this war situation. Because conditions are always changing every day. Of course every day, I feel anxious and afraid.” But behind his anxiety, Pepi is optimistic that this uncertain situation will end soon.
Sad to read comments on social media
“Friends and relatives in my neighborhood, people I respect, they condemn the Russian invasion of Ukraine. They hope and pray that this war will end soon,” Pepi said.
But according to him, there are only a handful of social media users who seem to be celebrating and happy with the military aggression carried out by Russia in Ukraine. “And that makes me sad, yes, because in Ukraine itself there have been many victims. Children, women, the elderly, they are innocent victims, I see. Because of the Russian army, they attacked not only military buildings, but also civil society buildings, schools, hospitals. And it makes me very, very sad, seeing so many comments celebrating, you know. It’s very, very inhumane,” he said.
Papi hopes that Indonesia, like other sovereign countries in the world, will join in condemning the Russian invasion. ” said Pepi. He also hoped that the Indonesian people would be more open to see the real situation in Ukraine, and contribute to creating peace.
Variety of comments
In Bandung, Suryadi often plays with his fingers on social media to support Russia. According to him, Russia is a country that is firm against western domination. However, Sulistyo doesn’t know Ukraine very well, and admits that he doesn’t know the root cause of the invasion. “I don’t know about Ukraine, it should still join the Soviet Union, yes, but separate,” he said when contacted by DW via social media. He asked that his real name not be revealed.
Meanwhile, another social media user, Anna Suwandi, said that some social media users who often write in support of Russia are because of their ignorance and simply expressing their hatred for the United States and NATO. “They ignore humanity, the fate of the people who have suffered as a result of this attack. He also hopes that Russia will immediately stop its attacks.
