Pepijn Lanen finds work more legitimate after winning Lennaert Nijgh Prijs | NOW

Rapper Pepijn Lanen, also known by his stage name Faberyayo, had never heard of the Lennaert Nijgh Prize before it became known that he could receive this prize for the best Dutch lyricist of the year. Nevertheless, since he immersed himself in the prize and previous winners, he finds his own work more legitimate, the rapper tells in conversation with NRC.

“Suddenly it doesn’t seem like a reason”, says Lanen about his work. “Although I am certainly not looking for recognition. At least not in a prize-winning way. We often won enough prizes with De Jeugd Van TEDENig (the rap group of which Lanen is a part, ed.).”

After winning, Lanen had to delve into the prize and the work of Lennaert Nijgh, the lyricist of singer Boudewijn de Groot. The 37-year-old rapper finds his place among previous Lennaert Nijgh Prize winners such as Huub van der Lubbe, Guus Meeuwis and Herman van Veen “a what you call an illustrious company to be in”.

On Friday it was announced that Lanen will receive the Lennaert Nijgh Prize on Monday during the Buma Awards. “Pepijn is a language innovator, to whom many, many people like to listen,” Buma Cultuur director Frank Helmink explained the choice for Lanen.
