Pepe was sent off for the third time this season at FC Porto, in a match on the 28th round of the I League. The captain of the blue and whites received a direct red from referee Fábio Veríssimo, in the defeat against Vitória de Guimarães, after protesting a lot with the decision of the assistant referee in giving the winning shot between Jota Silva and Zé Pedro.
Pepe ran towards the line inspector with both hands over his eyes, a gesture as if to say that the referee was missing glasses. He repeated the same gesture towards referee Fábio Veríssimo. He saw straight red in the 69th minute, leaving his team with 10 players.
It is the third time this season that the central defender has been sent off with a straight red: in the Super Cup against Benfica for aggression, in the League with Sporting also for aggression and now for protests.
This was also Pepe’s 20th expulsion in 850 games played in his long career. The first red was on February 9, 2002, against Machico, when he was playing for Marítimo B, in a game in the II Division ‘B’ Zona Sul.

FC Porto was defeated today by Vitória de Guimarães, 2-1, in the 28th round of the I Football League, with the Guimarães team remaining just two points behind the ‘dragons’, who recorded their second consecutive defeat.
At Estádio do Dragão, the Guimarães took the lead in the 12th minute, benefiting from an own goal by Galeno, and extended the advantage in the 33rd minute, through Jota Silva, with the same Galeno reducing for the ‘dragons’, in the 44th minute, in a game in which Pepe was sent off for protests and left FC Porto reduced to 10, in the 69th minute.
With this result, FC Porto, which already has six defeats in the championship, did not take advantage of Benfica’s defeats against Sporting and Sporting de Braga against Arouca, and is in third, with 58 points, two more than Braga and Vitória de Guimarães, both with 56, and nine fewer than Benfica (67), while the ‘lions’ lead with 71, and one game less.
Vitória de Guimarães, who in the middle of the week lost at home to FC Porto (1-0) in the first leg of the Portuguese Cup semi-finals, continues in a positive moment in the championship, with five consecutive victories.
