Pepco’s Success in Czech Republic Faces Uncertainty After Bankruptcy in Austria

Few retail chains have celebrated such successes in the Czech Republic as Pepco. As soon as he appeared, crowds flocked to his stores to buy the current range of goods, which changed regularly. The reason was mainly visually interesting products at very favorable prices.

Of course, the quality was different, but this concept fully suited the fast fashion trend. And really, families with children must love Pepco, because they can buy all kinds of things here really cheap, and when the little one grows out of them, they don’t have to regret putting them in a pile.

While in the Czech Republic Pepco has been a complete success and is constantly expanding here, elsewhere it is no longer such a fairy tale. Now it turns out that the whole concept may have some serious problems. The media brought the news that Pepco ended up in insolvency in Austria, which means that it basically went bankrupt there.

This also corresponds to the rapid closing of local stores in the local market. All 73 stores are ending immediately. So it’s not just some reduction of sales points, which could be understood. This is a not-so-great run from a country that just didn’t go very well.

How will it be in the Czech Republic?

Pepco itself is trying to turn this into a positive, especially in relation to shareholders. The company will no longer have to subsidize loss-making businesses and, on the contrary, will focus on development in those markets where it is successful. At the same time, the Czech Republic is among them.

Here, Pepco has hundreds of stores and is clearly doing well. However, it is a question of how it will be in the future. When it came here, the competition in this segment was weak. Today it is considerably larger and competitors in the form of Kiku, Tedi or Action are also growing. These are all chains focused on very cheap goods. Some Friday, the popular Primark is also here, offering cheap fashion.

So it will be interesting to see if by chance Pepco starts to fail in our country as well. On the other hand, this type of business is characterized by the economic crisis, when people do not have money to give away. And the Czech economy is not doing well right now.
