Sane Reveals Pep’s Messi Vision for Him at Manchester City
Former Manchester City star Leroy Sane recently shed light on his decision to join the Sky Blues over Liverpool, revealing interesting details about his conversations with both managers.
Speaking with The Guardian, Sane admitted that Jurgen Klopp, then at Liverpool, had personally reached out to him before he signed with City. "Yes, I spoke to them (Liverpool)," Sane said. "Jurgen called me and talked to me. This was before I signed a contract with City. He coached Dortmund very well. I met him when he was there. He is a good man. He is sincere. He also led Liverpool brilliantly."
Despite Klopp’s interest, Sane ultimately chose Manchester City, and he credits Pep Guardiola for helping him blossom into a Premier League star.
"For me, I needed some time to settle down and learn about the Premier League and the players," Sane explained. "I had to find confidence in myself. Then Pep asked me to play freely like Messi. Not playing like Messi, which is absolutely impossible. Be free like Messi and have fun, he said. He wanted me to do the things he needs from a striker like assists and goals."
This trust and creative freedom, Sane believes, were instrumental in his success at City. The German winger went on to win eight titles during his four-season stint at the Etihad Stadium, scoring 39 goals and assisting 43 times in 135 appearances.
After his time at City, Sane joined Bayern Munich, carrying his impressive form to the Allianz Arena. With 51 goals and 50 assists in 189 games, Sane continues to shine on the European stage.
Sane’s story offers a fascinating glimpse into the contrasting management styles of two of football’s biggest names, and the teenage prodigy’s extraordinary rise to superstardom.
