Manchester City (ING) coach Pep Guardiola complained about the new Club World Cup

So far, 19 of the 32 clubs that will compete in the 2025 Club World Cup have already been defined. One of them is Flamengo, for having won the Libertadores last year. Another participant will be Manchester City (ING), current European champion. However, the English team was not thrilled with the news. Coach Pep Guardiola criticized the decision, due to the tight calendar in the country.

FIFA made a decision that all clubs support. We will travel to the United States (host of the inaugural edition), hopefully with our families, and play the Club World Cup there. FIFA decided to expand, it’s the same thing that happens with the World Cup (of national teams). We have to adapt — said Guardiola, at a press conference.

I’m not against new competitions, I’m against the short time for recovery (for players), year after year. That’s what I complain about all the time. It’s nice to have a game every three, five, seven days, but when the season ends, we need time to start again — added Guardiola.

29 DAY WORLDWIDE

Therefore, the new Club World Cup will start on June 15, 2025. The big decision is scheduled for July 13, in the United States, as Guardiola highlighted. The competition will be held with eight groups of four teams, using the same system as the World Cup for national teams. From South America, six teams will compete in the tournament: Flamengo, FluminensePalmeiras, in addition to the Libertadores 2024 champion and two more teams according to the Conmebol ranking.

WORLD CUP 2023

Before playing the new World Cup, Pep Guardiola is trying to win the 2023 competition. After all, this Tuesday (19), the English team beat Urawa Reds (JAP), 3-0, and will face the Fluminense for the grand final. The match will be on Friday (22), starting at 3pm (Brasília time), in Saudi Arabia. Both teams never lifted the trophy.
