Pep Guardiola complains about Calvin Phillips’ weight gain after returning from World Cup in Qatar

London, UK (CNN) — Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said England midfielder Calvin Phillips returned from the World Cup overweight and not in good condition to play.

Calvin Phillips featured for just 40 minutes as a substitute for the ‘Three Lions’ at the World Cup in Qatar after recovering from a shoulder injury.

The 27-year-old midfielder will miss Manchester City’s upcoming confrontation with Leeds United, which has frustrated the team manager.

Guardiola said of Calvin Phillips’ stance on participation with the team: “He didn’t get injured, he’s back overweight,” adding: “I don’t know why, he hasn’t reached a condition that allows him to train and play.”

Pep Guardiola added: “That’s why he can’t play, when he’s ready he’ll play because we need him, we need him so much.”

When asked if he was disappointed to see Calvin Phillips like this again, Guardiola replied: “It’s a private conversation with him.”

Representatives of the Football Federation and the player refused to comment on the Spanish coach’s statements.
