Last night, after reconsideration, the People Power Party canceled the nomination of candidate Do Tae-woo, who caused controversy with his disparaging remarks on May 18.

Last night, a day before Emergency Response Committee Chairman Han Dong-hoon’s visit to Gwangju, the People Power Party canceled the nomination of candidate Do Tae-woo, who was criticized for his ‘May 18 disparaging’ remarks.

Although it took a week to take action after many twists and turns, Chairman Han’s steps seemed light.

″I think I have shown rather clearly how the People Power Party and I accept the May 18th Democratization Movement and the extent to which we respect it.″

However, in response to the Democratic Party’s proposal to promote the inclusion of the full text of the Constitution in the spirit of May 18 as a common pledge, they only said, “It is clear that this is the People Power Party’s position.”

Chairman Han Dong-hoon appealed for support on the street in front of the old Jeonnam Provincial Office where Gwangju citizens gathered in May 1980.

He visited Chungjang-ro, a historical symbol of May 18, as well as Suncheon in Jeollanam-do and Jeonju in Jeollabuk-do, repeatedly emphasizing his sincerity toward Honam.

″For the first time in 16 years, all districts in Honam have filed candidates. That’s because I really want to do well for Honam and I’m sincere.”

However, some citizens continued their one-person protests, including calling for an investigation into Australian Ambassador Lee Jong-seop, who is suspected of being subjected to ‘external pressure to investigate the death of Chae Sang-byeong.’

The cancellation of Candidate Do Tae-woo’s nomination, which was concluded after much pains, continued to have aftershocks the next day.

The Nomination Management Committee, which initially said it would “recognize the sincerity of the apology,” quickly decided to cancel the nomination after the abusive language that insulted former Presidents Roh Moo-hyun and Moon Jae-in from the Democratic Party was revealed again.

Chairman Han’s visit schedule to Honam was also a concern, but it appears that there was a great deal of pressure on central expansion.

″I think the reason we suddenly canceled the nomination was because additional facts kept coming to mind.″

Won Hee-ryong, chairman of the joint election committee, said, “It’s natural and it can’t be too late,” while Daegu Mayor Hong Jun-pyo criticized, “The party’s nomination is not a game of flipping hotteok, but is said to be like this and that.”
