The Prius has been considered an electric pioneer since its inception. It was there that Toyota showed its latest technologies and hybrid ideas. She didn’t always shine with them, after all, even the previous generation had a little over 100 horses and she looked… well, at least strange.
However, the last fifth generation worked hard on all the mentioned weaknesses. Prius has been transformed from an unattractive car into a stunningly beautiful car, and its appearance has earned it nicknames such as “the people’s lamo” across the internet, and for some it reminds us the first SUV from Ferrari. You may not like it, but it’s a huge improvement over its predecessor. And we are not surprised that we attract attention on the road, as if we were sitting in an excellent sports car that is many times more expensive.
Unlike the outside, you may be surprised that the creators in the cottage stick to the floor and the interior looks very “normal”. Of course, the latest technologies may not be missing, including a digital instrument panel or a large multimedia screen with navigation. But you can still set important things like the temperature or steering wheel heating with physical buttons and rotary controls.
We start our long-term Prius test (you can already watch the first detailed video at the top of the article at the beginning of the article) with a car in compressed specification including several extras that is extremely practical. For a few hundred, for example, you can get rubber elements in the trunk that protect the floor in the luggage compartment and the back of the seats. They can be removed and dismantled easily, while the shoe still looks like new.
It really wasn’t worth paying extra for the one unique thing a Prius can do – the glass roof. In addition, Toyota also offers the option of its own solar panel, which we already know from the previous generation. Here, mobile photovoltaics should extend the direct electric range up to eight kilometers on a sunny day.
Millions and millions
Toyota launched the first Prius back in 1997 in Japan and in 2000 on the global market – so everyone had to learn, what is this hybrid and how does it work?. But they learned it very quickly. Today (almost) every Toyota model sold is powered by a hybrid unit (or direct electric, except for respectable sports models of the GR family). To date, Toyota has sold more than 25 million of them worldwide, of which more than 5 million are the Prius model.
So a pure electric car? No way, still a hybrid! That is, a plug-in hybrid plug-in, which is the only engine available on the Czech market. Today, the Prius has a combined output of 223 horsepower and right at the start of the test, it surprised us with its flexible dynamics as well as its comfortable chassis. The electric range can be close to a hundred in the city, but the biggest surprise comes after the battery runs out.
The Prius benefits from the aerodynamic silhouette and a reasonable curb weight (about 1.5 tons), and even without juice, its two-liter atmospheric receives electrical assistance obtained, for example, by ‘ get back. So it will be able to travel through Czech regions with a consumption of about 4 l / 100 km. Fans of eco-drives will reach values starting with three, but even if you completely forget about the light leg, you will still move between 4.5 and 5.5 liters. And that includes the highway!
Locals hear about low fuel consumption, so why aren’t the roads full of Toyota news? The main reason is the price. A plug-in hybrid is more expensive than a classic hybrid (not to mention a conventional combustion engine), which is logically reflected in the purchase price.
The standard Prius price in the Czech Republic starts at 1,150,000 CZK, the top equipment costs more than 1.3 million. But now Toyota offers an attractive discount of 221,000 crowns, thanks to which the base price has dropped to a more appropriate 929,000 CZK. Although it will not be a big event, we will not be surprised by the amazing looks of passengers passing by that unusual car. And we are only at the beginning of our long-term experiment!
