Everyone with type 1 diabetes contributes to the enormous plastic soup through the necessary use of medical devices. Test strips, packaging for IVs or glucose sensors, needles and more: it all has a lot of packaging, mainly consisting of plastic. Diabetes+, the platform especially for people with type 1 diabetes, is taking action against this Plastic Diabetes Soup. By collecting all the waste from diabetes materials for a month, attention is being drawn to this problem.
People with type 1 diabetes are urged to save all their waste from their medical devices between June 15 and July 15. By sharing images of these collected mountains of waste on social media, we show the industry how big the #PlasticDiabetesSoup is. Because such an enormous amount of (plastic) waste: that is really no longer possible these days.
In conversation
Between June 15 and July 15, Diabetes+ will enter into discussions with organizations in the field of the environment and climate and with parties in the medical device industry. We do this LIVE on Instagram (@diabetesplus_nl). The broadcasts can also be viewed on YouTube and Facebook afterwards. In this way we want to work on a better world together with parties outside and within the industry.
On Thursday 1 July we will talk from 12.30 pm with the North Sea Foundation, which stands up for the importance of a clean sea. On Monday, July 5, at 8 p.m., we will have a talk with Insulin for Life, an organization that collects surplus diabetes materials to put them to good use in developing countries and crisis areas.
Top priority
Together we are taking a step in the right direction and we are drawing the attention of manufacturers and suppliers in the aids industry. People with type 1 diabetes want caring for the planet to be a top priority when developing packaging for diabetes materials. In this way we prevent the endless amount of plastic soup from becoming an even bigger, indestructible mountain of waste.
