The study comes at a time when nations have tightened the epidemic containment restrictions amid concerns about patients who may be contagious when they show no signs of disease, and the results question key assumptions underlying the measures that have been taken to stop the pandemic from spreading, such as
tracing an infected person’s contacts only to the point at which they began to show symptoms.
Experts have long suspected that some people who don’t even know they are infected can transmit the virus.
However, the new study suggests that even those who are visibly ill can be highly infectious before symptoms appear. ”More comprehensive criteria for identifying contacts to capture potential transmission events two to three days before symptoms begin should be considered for effective control of the outbreak, ”said the authors in the article published in Nature Medicine.
Contagious Before Symptoms Researchers compared clinical data on virus delivery from patients in a hospital in China to separate data on “transmission pairs” – in which one person has probably infected the other – and derived periods of infectivity from this.
The research team, led by Eric Lau from the University of Hong Kong, took throat swabs from 94 patients who were admitted to the Eighth People’s Hospital in Guangzhou, and measured infectivity over 32 days from the first day of symptoms, noting that none of which were classified as severe or critical, had the highest viral load shortly after the onset of symptoms, which then gradually decreased.
