‘People with anxiety disorders often miss corona vaccination’

People with a severe anxiety disorder often miss their corona vaccination, reports the Angst Dwang en Phobie (ADF) foundation. They do not dare to go to a GGD injection location, have a fear of injection, are afraid of becoming infected with corona due to a fear of contamination, do not dare to leave their home because of panic attacks or are afraid of side effects. According to the patient organization, hundreds of thousands of people are involved.

The foundation calls on outgoing minister Hugo de Jonge (Public Health) to think along about the problem. “Our telephone helplines are red hot with disturbed calls from people with anxiety and compulsive symptoms. They want to be protected against the corona virus, but are afraid to go to the GGD injection location,” says a spokeswoman for the foundation.

According to the organization, more than 1 million Dutch people suffer from an anxiety disorder that seriously negatively affects their daily life. “An estimated one in three of this group does not dare to go to an injection site,” said the spokeswoman. She points out that people with anxiety symptoms are not always self-assured and do not make themselves heard quickly. “So the people who call us are just the tip of the iceberg.”

According to the organization, a solution could be for this group of people to be visited and vaccinated at home with ‘injection buses’. This is now also happening among people in deprived areas, where the vaccination coverage is low.
