New York— People fully vaccinated against COVID-19 can meet other vaccinated people indoors without wearing a mask, according to new recommendations from federal health authorities.
The recommendations also say that vaccinated people can meet in the same way with people considered to be at low risk of serious disease; such is the case of vaccinated older people who want to visit healthy children and grandchildren.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced these guidelines Monday.
The recommendations respond that more adults have been vaccinated and wonder when they will be free to visit family members, be able to travel or do other activities as they did before the Covid-19 pandemic struck last year.
“We know that people want to get vaccinated so they can get back to doing the things they enjoy the most with their loved ones,” CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky said in a statement.
The CDC recommends that fully vaccinated people continue to wear well-fitting masks, avoid mass gatherings, and physically distance themselves from others when in public.
The CDC also advised vaccinated people to be retested if they develop symptoms that could be related to COVID-19.
Authorities say a person can be fully protective against the virus two weeks after receiving the last required dose of the vaccine. About 30 million Americans, or only about 9% of the United States population, have been fully vaccinated with a federally licensed coronavirus vaccine so far, according to the CDC.
