The aurora borealis from the territory of the Czech Republic was not observable tonight. Although experts admitted that the phenomenon could occur from Sunday to Monday, the Czech Astronomical Society (ČAS) stated on Facebook in the early evening that people would not see it from us in the end. Experts predicted the possibility of observing glow due to a strong eruption on the Sun on Thursday. Glow is the result of the interaction of a dense cloud of charged particles with the Earth’s atmosphere.

“Just to close the aurora case we add image of the solar wind from the ACE probe. The coveted cloud of matter has arrived from the Sun. According to Solarham.net at about 10:15 CET. Unfortunately, the speed of the solar wind increased to only about 450 km / s, much less than expected. Also, the activity of the geomagnetic field was only at level 4 for a short time and this was expected to be at least 7. We can therefore summarize that the most negative scenario occurred. The cloud arrived later and, moreover, there were no aurora borealis interesting for the inhabitants of the Czech Republic. Pavel Suchan from the Astronomical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic said this morning that the aurora borealis occurred tonight, but it was visible only from the Nordic countries and was not very strong there either.

Suchan said some physical values, when judging when and where aurora borealis would be seen, increased slightly at night. “But it only looks like a weak lateral impact by the Earth with cloud-charged particles released from the Sun two days earlier during a strong X1 class eruption,” Suchan said.

After Thursday’s strong solar flare, experts predicted a strong Arctic aurora, which had a chance that people from the Czech Republic and Slovakia would see them on Sunday night.

Astronomer Petr Horálek has previously stated that in the conditions of the Czech Republic, glow can be observed statistically once a year. In some years, however, it does not appear at all, in others, on the contrary, several times a year. The higher incidence is around the maximum of the eleven-year cycle of solar activity, which will occur in 2025. The last significant aurora borealis was seen by people from the Czech Republic in March 2015.
