You do not talk about money? Yes, thinks Kabel Eins and looks at German families in a new format. But where is the deeper meaning?
–
You do not talk about money! – The vernacular is as didactic as it is persistent. While in Sweden, for example, people have long been relying on total transparency and everyone can, theoretically, see the balance of their neighbors’ accounts, Germans have always kept a low profile when it comes to their finances. Even if executive or politician salaries are now made public, it is still taboo in this country to talk openly about money. But, to be honest: We’d be curious!

Kabel Eins is now opening the door wide for more transparency with a new program: “You talk about money!” is the title of the format planned for prime time, which has now been announced at the digital “Screenforce Days”. According to the broadcaster, German families from different shifts are looked at their accounts for a month – “from the receipt of money to the black or red number at the end of the month”.

With “You talk about money!” Kabel Eins is therefore undoubtedly breaking a taboo. The broader meaning of the program, Marc Rasmus, now explained in an interview with the teleschau agency. “Why is there so much month left at the end of the money? – This is a question that worries a lot of people,” said Rasmus. “That’s why we accompany four families for a month in each episode and get to the bottom of the question.” In his words, viewers could “follow exactly where the money goes, compare themselves with the families shown and draw conclusions about their own finances”.

Seen in this way, the new format fits perfectly with the Kabel-Eins portfolio. After all, the station sees itself as an “everyday companion for people”, said Rasmus, who emphasized in the conversation that, in his opinion, hardly any other station is as clearly positioned as Kabel Eins: “We have stood for values such as authenticity and reliability for years,” explained the TV manager in a teleschau interview at the start of the new TV season. “We enjoy a very high level of credibility with the spectators because they can rely on us. That is our greatest asset.”

After a difficult year for his broadcaster, too, the Kabel-Eins boss looks confidently into the future: “This consistency and consistency will remain the backbone of Kabel Eins, even in an increasingly fragmented and hectic media market.”
