People Parking in Highway Tunnels During Hailstorms: Is It Safe?

Today (on Saturday – ed.) something more than absurd happened to me. Driving along the AM6 Struma before the Blattino tunnel, it rained heavily. I slowed down and just before entering the tunnel I realized that it was starting to hail heavily.

This was commented on Facebook by Diana Rusinova from the European Center for Transport Policies.

When I entered the tunnel at a speed of about 50-60 km/h, I found that inside towards the middle of the facility in both lanes there were cars stopped with emergency lights.

At first I thought that there had been an accident and that this was the reason for the stopped cars. I was in our company car and immediately opened the specialized dashboard with a sign of attention. This way I minimized the possibility of someone rear-ending us at high speed and causing a chain disaster.

After a while the cars moved slightly and only then did I realize that they had all stopped in the tunnel to protect themselves from the hail! I have no words to describe my outrage because you have to be mentally ill to pull over in a freeway tunnel to protect your car’s sheet metal from hail.

What if at that moment I was in a civilian car and a truck had come at us at 90 km/h? I had to pay with my life, myself and others in the tunnel, because someone decided to use a highway tunnel for a garage…

After 5 minutes, a traffic police car came and drove these crazy people away. I hope they fined them.
