“People have decided to shoot themselves after the Covid”, warns Mathias Wargon on RTL

This Tuesday, June 7, several nursing unions had gone on strike to ask for more resources in hospitals, asking, in particular, the establishment of a massive recruitment policy. Guest on RTL, Mathias Wargonhead of emergencies at the Delafontaine hospital in Saint-Denis, deplores the departure of caregivers.

“People decided to shoot themselves after the Covid”, he throws. “We don’t bring in new people. (…) Those we have, we try to keep them with bonuses,” he adds. In particular to combat the unpopularity of the emergency service, “the worst service”, according to Mathias Wargon.

Marion Malphettes, hematologist at the Saint-Louis hospital in Paris, also points to the degraded functioning of the hospital. “In our establishment, out of a room with 23 beds, 9 are closed, or more than a third. When we have reduced capacity, we have to postpone patients, especially in chemotherapy, because we don’t have room. It’s not medicine“, she regrets.

Mathias Wargon believes that the Ségur de la santé, which provides for an increase of 183 euros net per month for caregivers, does not encourage vocations either. “Everyone thought that after the Covid, the situation would get better (…) then everything is back to normal and people decided to get away,” he said.

“The 183 euros of regularization of Ségur were experienced as a catch-up after the freezing of the index point. Money is not enough. The working conditions are unsustainable for those who stay. In particular, it is necessary upgrade work at night and at weekends,” said Marion Malphettes.
