People from 1957 are allowed to exchange second AstraZeneca shot • WHO: ‘The virus is not gone yet’

From new wave of corona infections Initially mainly affected young people, but now the number of cases is also increasing in nursing homes. On Wednesday, 25 nursing home residents tested positive, the highest number since May 5.

In the past four weeks, there were at least 36 locations where at least one corona infection was discovered. Compared to the January peak, the number of positive tests is now limited. At that time, almost 900 locations were struggling with corona infections. Around the turn of the year, more than fifty residents died every day. Because an infection can have serious consequences for the elderly, nursing home residents were one of the first groups to be vaccinated at the beginning of this year.

The corona vaccines cannot prevent every infection, but the vaccinated residents who have now tested positive are less ill than without vaccination, according to Nanda Hauet, director of the association of geriatric specialists.

“A nursing home is part of society. If the number of cases in society increases, so do the infections in the nursing home.” Many residents have been vaccinated against the coronavirus, as have some of the employees. “But that does not apply to all visitors, for example, or to young holiday workers, for example,” says Hauet.
