All mink in Denmark must be killed for infection control reasons, the Danish government demanded last week. Now they admit that they had not done their homework.
Last week, all Danish mink breeders were informed that all mink in the country must be killed after a mutated coronavirus has started to spread in mink in North Jutland.
The only problem was that the Danish government did not have legal authority to order the killing of healthy animals.
On Tuesday, the Danish government sent out a new letter in which it changes its wording from ordering the mass murder of mink, to asking for it. At the same time, work is being done on possible legislative changes that could give the government the authority to demand it.

However, Danish mink breeders say there is no going back, and that the industry will continue killing.
– It is a terrible and difficult situation, that an industry is closed down immediately. But there is no going back. The management of our organization completely agrees with that, says leader Tage Pedersen in Danske Minkavlere.
The killing is in full swing. Because it will happen so quickly, several kilometers long mass graves have now been dug at a military training area in Holstebro, writes Dagbladet Holstebro-Struer.
Each grave is 3 meters wide, 2.5 meters deep and 2.5 kilometers long. At the bottom, 25 centimeters of lime are added to remove the risk of infection. Then a meter-thick layer of dead mink is laid to rot. The animals are covered again with lime, before the grave is covered with one meter of soil, the newspaper writes.

The burial takes place close to a local bathing water and on Sunday about 200 people demonstrated and kept one minute of silence for the bathing water.
– People are shaken and angry. They ask where democracy has gone. It is as if this has happened in the gloom and darkness of the night. I do not understand that a state can work like this, says Per E. Østgaard who is a member of Nørre Felding civic association to Danish TV 2.
On Tuesday, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen apologized to the mink breeders that an order was sent out for the killing of healthy animals as well, when there was only legal authority to send out a request to this effect.
The fear is that the mutated virus will spread. It has previously been estimated that killing all mink populations can cost up to 5 billion Danish kroner.
