The first »Main FlussFilmFest« begins in Bayreuth on Tuesday. The cinema festival in twelve Franconian and two Hessian cities is dedicated to various aspects of the subject of water, as the organizers announced. The evening of March 14th in the Bayreuth cinema franz & gloria marks the beginning. The festival ends on March 26th in Frankfurt.
The main film is the production »River« by Australian filmmakers Jennifer Peedom and Joseph Nizeti. From a bird’s eye view, the film tells of mankind’s complicated relationship with the vital resource of water.
“We want to use the cinema format to inspire as many people as possible with the vision for living rivers and get them talking to each other,” says Anne Schmitt, Managing Director of the association Flussparadies Franken, which is one of the organizers. The films and the supporting program are primarily dedicated to the heavy human impact on rivers and the associated major changes in river landscapes.
According to the organizers, in addition to the film screenings, art exhibitions, puppet theater, lectures and guided tours are also part of the festival. There is also a garbage collection campaign, the »MainCleanUp«. Other venues besides Bayreuth and Frankfurt are Lichtenfels, Bamberg, Zeil am Main, Schweinfurt, Kitzingen, Würzburg, Karlstadt, Gemünden, Marktheidenfeld, Miltenberg, Aschaffenburg and Offenbach.
The Main has two source rivers in eastern Upper Franconia: the White Main has its source in the Fichtelgebirge, the Red Main in Franconian Switzerland. At Kulmbach, the two courses of the river unite to form the actual Main.
