Penumbral lunar eclipse – this is when the moon passes through the earth’s penumbra or the faint outer part of the earth’s shadow. During a penumbral lunar eclipse, the Moon is usually dim. In addition, the satellite does not fall into the terrestrial umbra – the darker, inner part of the planet’s shadow. This type of dimming occurs when the Sun, Earth, and Moon are not perfectly aligned and some of the sunlight is blocked by the Earth from reaching the Moon’s surface directly.
